Are You Worried About Your Retirement?

It’s normal to worry about the future, but are you worrying about the right things? According to a recent survey by Age Wave, your retirement worries might be slightly misplaced (although understandable).

After polling Americans under age 65, the study’s authors found that the leading retirement concern is finances. That’s probably no big surprise to you, since most of us wonder whether we have saved enough for retirement, and whether that money will last for the rest of our lives. When you factor in inflation, and the uncertain future of Social Security, it’s no wonder we tend to focus on money while planning for retirement.

Oddly, though, money was not the top concern of those over age 65. The study found that the older group of study participants actually ranked their health as their number one retirement concern. In fact, this group also said that health matters even more than financial security! A whopping 81 percent of participants said that good health is the number one ingredient for a happy retirement.

Of course, health and finances can be related. Most of the retirees who responded to the study (86 percent) said that maintaining or improving their health could help them manage their out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. So, while staying healthy certainly helps you enjoy your retirement years more, we should all consider how our health also impacts our finances.

The study also delved into the health habits of its participants. Not surprisingly, it found that retirees who rated their health as “excellent” or “very good” were twice as likely to exercise regularly, eat a nutritious diet, maintain a healthy weight, and nourish their social connections.

The lesson here is that even though financial planning is immeasurably important in building a secure future, you should also make your health a top priority. Good health will help you enjoy your retirement more, while also helping you stay on budget.
